The thought has been grazing around the edges of the pasture that is my consciousness, but I had been previously ignoring it. In addition, I had someone who was reminding me that too much was just… well, too much. Thus, I decided to take a “face-cation,” that is a Facebook vacation. It has been bliss and it is not quite over! However, I am checking in. I did wander on each day; I wanted to see what my friend Sue was up to. She was visiting her daughter in Buenos Aires. It was great to read their updates and see the photos. If someone had a birthday I wished them a happy birthday. I “liked” a foundation that was started for a local teenager who just died. However, I was (uncharacteristically) silent. It was so weird at first, but overall it has been great. So great that I am not inclined to jump back on to the train. So what did I do? Well, I did observe a lot of silence; something I had started earlier in the week. Despite my strongest urges to listen to First Wave on Sirius XM (remember, I have temporarily inherited my deceased sister-in-law’s car and with it, her Sirius subscription), or to simply listen to Alan on WAMC, I left the radio off. First Wave is a real pull for me – Larry the Duck in the mornings (ahhh… dreams of WLIR-FM) and a playlist that has me singing at the top of my lungs. But no – I chose silence, just trying to be still and pay attention to my driving. What else did I do? Here is a list:

  • Spent more quality time with my family – we went to the Columbia County Fair on Saturday night and had a great time
  • Slept more
  • Exercised at least an hour a day, including running 2.70 miles today. Yes. Me. Really.
  • Made another batch of fresh tomato sauce from our bountiful crop of tomatoes
  • Cleaned the house – really cleaned
  • Read the better part of a book, on a Nook! My first ebook.
  • Wrote many notecards to people
  • Made a list of things I would like to write about
  • Helped out at one funeral for a teenager (massively sad and yet remarkably beautiful all at once)
  • Cleaned out email
  • Tried -again- to write my 9/11 memories. Stopped – again. *sigh*
  • Started transferring both of my existing blogs to Word Press (here we are!)
  • Did some work on my school project blog – already on Word Press
  • Did I mention sleep? Exercise? Reading?
  • Prepared for my short trip

I am headed out of town, just overnight – I have a friend from the UK who will be in Massachusetts. Enjoy the silence – I sure am. (The song must be all of that First Wave listening; I am not sure how I feel about the imagery, but I am going with it.)

  1. Fran…you didn’t tell us on blogspot that you were moving! Glad I saw the link on FB. But I have to say the WordPress interface in Safari on my iPad is way cool.

  2. Well, as you know, I have done various kinds of “unplugging” as a monastic practice–you remember my “fasting from Facebook a meal a day (8 hours) during Lent. It’s an important part of how I balance.

  3. Mightily impressive new platform here Fran. Congrats on making the changeover- I admire your efforts and resolve.
I would love to move to WordPress too but am intimidated by what it involves.
Look forward to reading more sparky posts.
    Blessings

  4. I too was away from the internet over the weekend. It was grand. I’d really like to at least cut back on my computer time. We shall see….

As you were saying...
